Big Train Get Back in the Win Column, Down Aces 7-3

By:David Schneider
Kit Scheetz is 4-0 with a 1.33 ERA on the season.

After what seemed like forever, the Bethesda Big Train finally took the field again on Saturday night against the Gaithersburg Giants.  Kit Scheetz (Virginia Tech) looked to continue his incredible first half of the season.  In five innings of work, Scheetz gave up seven hits and two earned runs against zero walks and three strikeouts in the 7-3 victory for the Big Train.  Scheetz allowed more hits in a start than he has before, but he was still able to command the strike zone and put forth a quality start.

Tim Yandel (Tulane) came out the bullpen for the Big Train and pitched three innings giving up only two hits and one run, striking out three batters on the way to his first win on the season.  Yandel did a good job holding the lead while the Big Train offense continued to score runs.  It was not until two outs in his third inning pitched that the Giants were able to get their first and second hit off of him.  Josh Thorne (Stetson) came in for the 9th inning and secured the four run lead despite loading the bases.

The Big Train was able to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth), who reached base after being hit by a pitch, crossed home plate on a deep double down the right field line hit by Johnny Cole (Coastal Carolina).

During the top of the 5th inning, the Giants were able to score two runs giving them the lead, but the Big Train tacked on a run for themselves.  Stephen Alemais (Tulane) started the inning off with a single.  He then stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball.  Brandon Lowe (Maryland) then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at two a piece.

In the 6th inning, the Big Train was able to take a 4-2 lead.  Chris Lewis (Sacramento State) led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch by the Giants.  Ryne Willard (N.C. State) then hit a sacrifice fly to score Cody Brown (Mississippi State) who reached base after walking.

The Big Train was able to push across one more run in the 7th inning.  Logan Farrar got his second single on the night and then scored on the third sacrifice fly of the night for the Big Train, hit by Chris Lewis.

After singles by Andrew Brown (San Diego State) and Ryne Willard and a walk by Tony DiLeo (Eastern Michigan), Stephen Alemais hit a two-run single to give the Big Train a comfortable 7-3 lead going into the 9th inning.

Notes: Cody Brown had another outfield assist, throwing out a runner at home in the 1st inning....  Stephen Alemais recorded two hits and two RBI....Logan Farrar had two hits and an RBI....Come out Sunday night as the Big Train take on the Aces at Povich Field.
