Big Train College Round-Up: 2/27/2015

As the second week of college baseball is coming to end, we have a chance to see some of the hard work and consistency of Big Train players around the country. This second week was big for some of the former and current Big Train ball players, and we can see their efforts leading to good starts for their respective teams.

Again, we will start with the players on local teams – Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth, Radford, George Mason, and High Point.

Maryland is off to a 5-1 start with Brandon Lowe (BT ’14) leading off and leading the way. Lowe has a .533 On-base percentage including six hits, six walks, and four hit-by-pitches, on his way to his team-leading 10 runs scored.

In a tough beginning to the season for VCU, Logan Farrar (BT ’13-’15) is leading his team with a .353 batting average, also adding five walks, and three stolen bases.

Radford pitcher, Michael Boyle (BT ’13), has two starts on the season, going 1-0 in 13 innings pitched with a meager 1.38 ERA.

Brandon Gum (BT '12,’15) of George Mason is batting .357 on the season.

High Point’s Cody Manzella (BT ’14) is having a terrific start to his 2015 college campaign, batting .444 with two doubles and two triples. In his last game on February 21, Manzella was a homerun away from hitting for the cycle, going 3/4 with four RBI.

Moving down south, we’ll take a look at performances of Big Train players from Florida Atlantic, Tulane, and Mississippi State.

Florida Atlantic is starting their season off very strong at 6-2, behind a strong offensive effort from Ricky Santiago (BT ’13). Santiago is batting .333, with 12 hits, and a team-leading 11 RBI. They have also seen plenty of solid outings from pitchers Bo Logan (BT ’12, 14) and Brandon Rhodes (BT ’14). In four appearances, Logan is 2-0 with a save in 6.2 innings pitched. Rhodes has two starts on the season, and has posted a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings, striking out 10 batters.

Tulane has also started off hot, going 8-1 so far this season. Stephen Alemais (BT ’14) is batting .447, adding five stolen bases, and tremendous defense (VIDEO). Tim Yandel (BT ’13-’15) is continuing his impressive transition to pitching. In his second outing of the season he went seven innings strong, allowing three hits and one run.

Mississippi State has begun their season undefeated, going 9-0. Cody Brown (BT ’14-’15) has posted a batting average of .333, including two doubles, a triple, and five RBI.

Now, out west to see how Big Train players are faring at Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State, San Francisco, and San Diego State.

For Cal State Northridge, Nolan Flashman (BT ’15) is leading the team in batting average, posting a .412 mark, adding four RBI. Calvin Copping (BT ’15) has been terrific on the mound early in the season. In two starts, Copping is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA, striking out 13. Cal State Northridge is 10-1 on the season.

From Sacramento State, Chris Lewis (BT ’14-’15) is batting .296 and is posting a good slugging percentage with two doubles and two home runs of the season, adding seven RBI.

Out in San Francisco, Cody Snider (BT ’15) is doing a great job. In mainly a pinch hitting role, Snider is batting .333 with three doubles.

San Diego State has started the season 8-1, and a lot can be contributed to the middle of the line-up that includes Ty France (BT ’13) and Andrew Brown (’14-’15). France is batting .400, with 14 hits, and nine runs, posting a .629 slugging percentage, and also playing great defense (VIDEO). Andrew Brown is batting .343 with 12 hits, including five doubles, scoring 10 runs, and walking five times.
