Bethesda Stunned by Rockville

Justin Morris (Maryland) takes a hack.

The Bethesda Big Train were stunned Saturday night as they fell to the Rockville Express, 6-3.

Rockville grabbed a sizable lead early in the game, plating six runners in the third inning. They forced All-Star Drew Strotman (St. Mary’s) out of the game after 2.2 innings.

Alex Calvert (Erskine) entered the game in relief and pitched exceptionally well. He gave up no runs on four hits and fanned a season-high 10 batters in 6.1 innings of work.

Bethesda got a couple runs back in the bottom of the inning as Clayton Daniel (Jacksonville St.) hit a bloop double over the first baseman that scored Logan Farrar (VCU). The offense continued when Allen Smoot (San Francisco) hit a line drive single to center field cutting the Rockville lead to four.

The Express threatned once again in the fourth inning with runners on first and third. However, Calvert forced a perfect groundball to set a 6-3 double play.

Farrar, Daniel and Smoot continued to provide offense for the Big Train in the fifth inning. Each reached base safely, loading the bases for Vinny Esposito (Sacramento St.) with one out.  On a rare dropped infield fly, Esposito was able to knock Farrar home who reached base by way of walk.

In fact, stranding runners proved to be a problem for the Big Train. They connected for 11 hits but could not bring runners home as they left the bases loaded twice and 12 players total on base.

Bethesda moves to 19-10 with the loss. They return to Shirley Povich Field tomorrow night to take on the Vienna Riverdogs for Halloween Night. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
