Madrigal Masterful, Big Train Stymie T-Bolts in Game 1 Win

By:Carolina Velloso
Ty Madrigal (St. Mary's) pitched eight shutout innings in Tuesday's Game 1 win.

Ty Madrigal (St. Mary’s) pitched eight incredible innings and the Big Train won their first game of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League playoffs, 2-0.

“Ty was fantastic,” manager Sal Colangelo said. “He kept them off balance and had great command. When you throw strikes and you execute, you’re going to win a lot of games.”

Needing just 83 pitches to get through eight frames, Madrigal limited the T-Bolts – undoubtedly tired after playing ten dramatic innings against the Aces in the wildcard game – to just two hits, both singles, while picking up four strikeouts.

“There’s nothing like it” Madrigal said about pitching in the postseason. “[Catcher Justin Morris] and I had a good approach and we were just on the same page, so it was fun.”

A home run by Kevin Milam (St. Mary’s) and an RBI double from Jordan Sergent (High Point), both in the sixth inning, was all the run support Madrigal needed.

“It feels good,” Milam said about contributing to the Game 1 win. “Every game is a big game when you’re in the playoffs.”

Stephen Schoch (Maryland-Baltimore) came out to pitch the ninth and picked up just where he left off in the regular season, striking out two of the three batters he faced to earn the save.

“It’s always good to get the first game of the playoffs under your belt,” Colangelo said.

The Big Train will look to wrap up this best-of-three semifinal series tomorrow in Silver Spring. After managing just six hits in Game 1, the Big Train will look to harness their prodigious power in Wednesday’s contest.

“We have the momentum right now. Hopefully we can finish the series tomorrow,” Milam said..
