The homerun was Lewis’ third of the season, tied for the most in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Summer League.

“Zack Kirtley (St. Mary’s College (CA)) ran by me after he flew out,” Lewis said. “He just gave me a rundown of the guy’s stuff. I think that is what helped me a lot. It made me feel more comfortable when I got into the box.”

Lewis said Kirtley gave him intel on the pitcher’s slider that he used to launch the game winning homerun.

“He told me that the guy’s slider wasn’t very hard and that I could recognize out of his hands,” Lewis said. “So I think he deserves a lot of the credit for that.”

Aside from the final score and a brief 4-3 lead from the bottom of the sixth through the top of the 8^th, the Big Train trailed.

After giving up three runs in the first inning, the Big Train answered back quickly in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer from Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth University) and a RBI single from Harrison Crawford (Creighton University) to close the score to 3-2.

After the Grays extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the 3^rd, a Chris Lewis RBI single drew the game closer at 4-3. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nicholas Feight (UNC Wilmington) hit a two-out single that brought in two runs, although the second run came off of an error by the Grays catcher.

Unfortunately for the Big Train, the team gave up the tying run in the top of the eighth inning to send the game into extras.

The Big Train pitching staff had a solid outing to keep the Big Train within scoring distance, as Alex Calvert (University of South Carolina), Tyler Loptien (San Diego State University), Miller Trevvett (Radford University) and Walker Sheller (Stetson University) combined to give up 10 hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts through 10 innings.

In the end though, all that mattered was Chris Lewis’ homerun that got the team the victory.

“It feels good,” Lewis said. “It feels good to get another win and keep adding to the win column.”
