Can Big Train Roll Through the Hot River Dogs?![]() The Big Train will look to cement their place as one of the leagues best against the River Dogs tonight. Credit: Lisa A. Kammerman/BigTrainPhotos The Bethesda Big Train take on the Vienna River Dogs tonight, Friday July 10th, at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is at 7:30 PM. The River Dogs are currently one step behind the Big Train for first place in the Cal Ripken League South Division, so this game could prove who deserves the number one spot. This is going to be a great game with two evenly matched teams. The Big Train wield a commanding 20-7 record while the River Dogs stand at 13-10. Bethesda has recorded nine less errors than Vienna has so far this summer. The Big Train also have a much lower average ERA, which could be a big factor in tonight’s game as the River Dogs are one of the best offenses in the league. On the other hand, the River Dogs have a higher total batting average, less strike outs at bat, and are comfortable away from home with an 8-4 record on the road so far this season. Logan Farrar (VCU) was injured Wednesday night in Bethesda’s win over the Baltimore Dodgers while sliding into second base. He left the game, receiving attention from the team’s trainer. The Big Train will be at a great disadvantage if Farrar is unable to play tonight, as they would lose their speedy outfielder in a game against a highly offensive River Dogs team. The Big Train will need to watch out for River Dogs players Kevin Lachance (UMBC), outfielder Shaun Wood (West Virginia), and leading pitcher Jack Gomersall (Virginia Military Institute). The River Dogs should look out for Big Train superstars Tim Yandel (Tulane), who has one of the lowest ERA on the team, Zach Kirtley (St. Mary’s, CA.), the team’s best hitter with an average of .340, Chris Lewis (Sacramento State University) the team’s home run leader, and Justin Morris (Maryland), a catcher with a cannon for an arm. “Honestly, we’re a better team and can win,” said Yandel. We will see if he is correct tonight. |
