Kammerman/BigTrainPhotos Brandon Hunley’s style of play personifies the meaning of the Big Train Hustle Award. His commitment to the game and knowing when to stay cool and when to turn the motor up and get aggressive is a big reason that Hunley has won the summer 2015 Hustle Award. Part of being the hustle award winner means that the player showed great enthusiasm and hard work on the offensive and defensive end, as well as on the base paths. Brandon Hunley did just that. Hunley came into the summer with Big Train hoping to, “find a way everyday to make myself better and [help] the team win.” And according to Brandon, he, “became a better base runner and learned a lot of little things on the offensive and defensive end” while in Bethesda for the Summer. Hunley played in 38 of the 40 regular season games for Big Train. Despite his mediocre batting average of .221 at the plate, Hunley still showed up in big situations where his heart and hustle mattered. In an early season game, Hunley showed the traveling Bethesda fans his capabilities as a player. In the first inning of the June 12 game against the Rockville Express, Hunley delivered a double to left field scoring two runs. Later in the game with Big Train up 3-1, Hunley delivered another RBI double. This one proved to be the game winner, as the Express knocked home two runs in the eighth inning. Hunley was one of the players that could line a ball to the outfield and get to second base so that the next batter could hit with a man in scoring position. On the summer, Hunley recorded eight doubles out of his 29 hits. He also stole 10 bases on the year, which was tied for second on the team. In the field, Hunley spent the majority of his time at second base. Hunley was all over the right side of the infield, getting balls up the middle destined for the outfield, and others that look like perfect base hits in between first and second base. Hunley totaled 119 assists which was 35 more than the next closest Big Train player and 49 more than any other second basemen in the whole Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. Congratulations to Brandon Hunley on a great summer at Big Train.
