Preview: Big Train Looks to Keep Momentum Rolling into Alexandria![]() Garrett Kueber (Moorpark) scored the second and tying run in the 9th inning against the Aces on June 25th. The Big Train have finally hit their stride as the team has been victorious in seven of its last eight games. The second of those seven wins came against the Alexandria Aces on June 25th, in quite possibly the team's most exciting game of the season. After scratching back from an early 2-0 deficit, the Big Train found itself in another hole, giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Gunnar Lambert (FAU) doubled to lead off the bottom half of the eighth inning, before advancing to third and then scoring on successful at-bats from Cody Brown (Mississippi State) and Vinny Esposito (Sacramento State) respectively. The Aces the jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning. One more time Bethesda showed its resiliency. Trailing by two with the bases empty and one walk, Cam Daugherty (Bowling Green State) and Garrett Kueber (Moorpark) used a hit-by-pitch and a base-on-balls to put the tying runs on base. Clayton Daniel (Jacksonville State) knocked in Daugherty with a groundout, but also recorded the team's second out. Allen Smoot (San Francisco) then stepped up to the plate with two outs and the tying run on second base. He roped a single to tie the game then advanced on another Lambert base hit. Finally Brown put the game to rest with the third straight two-out hit. Lambert went 3-for-5 at the plate while Daniel and Brown each recorded two hits of their own. The Big Train used that game to begin its current hot-streak and will hope to again let this game lead to a victory which is followed by multiple victories. Similarly to the team, Drew Strotman (St. Mary's), Bethesda's projected starter, will look to keep his momentum rolling. In his last outing (on June 27 against Gaithersburg), Strotman struck out seven batters in five shutout innings. He has been Bethesda's best pitcher in terms of ERA this season, limiting opponents to just 1.12 per game. The Aces -- who trail Bethesda by 2.5 games in the South Division -- have been on a recent roll of their own. Since losing to Bethesda in late June, Alexandria has won six of their last eight games. They have been guided by first baseman Cade Sorrells and outfielder Liam McArthur. Both players have hit over .350 so far this summer. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. |
