Big Train veterans lead the way offensively as Logan Farrar (VCU), Cody Brown (Miss St.) and Justin Morris (Maryland) each had a tremendous impact on the game. Combined, they provided the team with five hits and seven RBIs.

“We are just trying to come out and lead by example,” Farrar said. “We just have to take this seriously and keep rolling as a team.”

Johnny York (St. Mary’s) pitched a phenomenal game. Over six innings of work, he gave up no earned runs and struck out seven. He moves to 1-0 this postseason.

York set the tone early on the game. He struck out five in his first two innings of work.

The offense quickly asserted their dominance. In the bottom of the inning, Allen Smoot (San Francisco) crushed a ball off the center field wall, scoring Clayton Daniel (Jacksonville St.) from second. Vinny Esposito (Sacramento St.) kept the offense going as he smacked a double to deep center, which brought home Smoot. Morris knocked a single to center and scored Esposito. His RBI gave the Big Train a 3-0 lead.

Farrar kept the offense rolling in the second inning. After Austin Hale (Stetson) roped a single to right field, Farrar hit a bomb over the right field wall to extend the lead to five.

Gaithersburg pushed across two unearned runs in the third to pull within three.

However, Brown got in on the fun in the bottom of the inning. He launched a solo shot over the right field wall and made the score 6-2.

The Giants would get the run back in the top of the fourth, scoring another unearned run.

Bethesda did not back down. They kept the pressure on in the bottom of the fifth. After loading the bases, Morris sqeeked a grounder by the first baseman scoring 2 runs. Michael Emodi (Creighton) and Austin Hale continued the tirade of runs. Emodi laced a two-RBI double to left field and Hale grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice, putting up the Big Trains 12^th run. Farrar capped the six run inning with a RBI double off the center field wall.

In the bottom of the seventh, Esposito got a hold of a pitch over the plate and crushed it over the center field wall for the team’s third homerun of the game. Bethesda held a 13-3 lead.

The Big Train would cruise to a 14-7 victory.

“We were very physical and very aggressive,” manager Sal Colangelo said of his team’s performance at the plate. “We were hitting our pitches. We did what we needed to do and I was very proud of them.”

Bethesda looked like they had a chip on their shoulder throughout the victory and Farrar believes it is because they fell short of a regular season title.

“It didn’t sit with us well,” Farrar said of their second place finish. “We want to come out here and prove something in the playoffs.”

With a 1-0 series lead, the Big Train look to end the series tomorrow in Gaithersburg. Game two is set for 7:00 p.m. tomorrow.
