Manager Sal Colangelo doing Big things for the Big Train

Sal Colangelo shows his fiery passion for the game and for the team.

Sal Colangelo: The man, the myth, the legend.  Sal has been with Big Train since the inaugural 1999 season when the team was a part of the Clark Griffith League.  In 2005, Sal became the head Manager and has never looked back.  After a successful 2016 campaign that saw Big Train win the CRCBL South Division and it’s 5th CRCBL championship, Colangelo was honored by the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches (MSABC) as the CRCBL Manager of the Year.  It was a much-deserved honor after a 28-12 regular season and a postseason championship.  Despite a shaky start to summer 2016 season due to injuries and late arrivals Sal added late recruits and convinced catchers, middle infielders, and corner infielders to play outfield for the first time in their careers, and coached them to play those positions well.  No ordinary manager can get through a third of the season with one “real” outfielder, but Sal made it work and turned it into a championship season.  Sal was previously awarded the Amateur Coach of the Year by the MSABC in 2011 after the Big Train was named the 2011 National Champions.

Since 2005, when Sal took over as Head Manager, the Big Train has won seven regular season championships and five league championships.  His overall record is 339-155 (.686) and postseason record is 28-15 (.651), both of which are incredible clips.  With just 12 wins to go, Sal has the chance to earn Big Train’s 500th regular season win.  A miraculous feat in just 19 summers of 40-game seasons.

In Sal’s 12 years as Big Train’s Manager, he has coached and helped develop six major league ball players, all of whom currently sit on an MLB roster, including Cleveland Indians closer, Cody Allen (BT ’08,10), Minnesota Twins All-Star Brian Dozier (BT ’06), and San Diego Padres Hunter Renfroe (BT ’11-12).  All of them have made significant contributions to their respected clubs.

With a wealth of baseball knowledge, the ability to recruit top-level talent, and coaching prowess, it is always exciting to see what Sal Colangelo has in store for future summers.  Big Train games are always entertaining, and Sal is the keen mind behind the team.
