College Round Up: March 29![]() Maryland Terrapins: Justin Morris – Catcher – (BT 2014-2016) - The Terps kicked off Big Ten play this weekend and in the team’s 7-2 victory over the Michigan Wolverines on Friday Morris delivered his biggest hit of the season: a three-run homer in the 2nd inning. Morris, a three-year Big Train player and fan-favorite, has gotten off to a slow start at the dish, hitting just .194 for the season, but his massive homer over the weekend certainly has him trending in the right direction. John Murphy – Pitcher – (BT 2016 & 2017) - Murphy, a Sophomore, has played sparingly so far this season, but has shined whenever given an opportunity; over the weekend, his solid play continued, as he pitched two shutout innings on Sunday in the Terps 6-2 loss against the Wolverines. Through 6.0 total innings this season, Murphy has yet to allow an earned run.
East Carolina Pirates Tyler Smith – Pitcher – (BT 2017) - Smith, a Freshman, picked up his first collegiate win on Sunday in his first start of the season, pitching five strong innings, allowing just two hits and one run. He’s been solid out of the bullpen all year, as well (3.72 ERA), and we’re extremely excited for his debut with the Big Train this summer.
Chipola College Indians Andrew Bechtold – Infield – (BT 2015) - To say that Bechtold is having a big year would be an immeasurable understatement; for the season, Bechtold is hitting an unthinkable .454 with eight homers, 37 RBI, 46 runs and 15 stolen bases in a mere 35 games. Last week in his team’s four-game series against Northwest Florida State College, Bechtold had six hits and scored seven runs, adding to his already amazing season.
Kentucky Wildcats Luke Heyer – Infield – (BT 2017) - Heyer, a Freshman, has been primarily used as a pinch-hitter recently, as the level of competition has ramped up in the past week or so. Heyer has taken advantages of his opportunities, though, as he has 12 hits in 36 official at-bats this season (18 games played/11 starts). In last week’s series opener over the Ole Miss Rebels, Heyer had a hit, scored a run, and drove in another in the Wildcats’ 4-2 victory. We very much look forward to Heyer’s debut with the Big Train this summer.
San Francisco Dons Allen Smoot – Infield – (BT 2016) - Smoot, an All-Star third basemen for Big Train last summer, has resumed the form Big Train fans became accustomed to. Smoot has seven hits over his last three games to get his average to .330 on the season. He added four walks and five runs scored. Harrison Bruce – Outfield – (BT 2013) - Bruce is having his best season to date with the Dons. He’s always been speedy on the base paths (7-7 for this year), but he is also hitting .311 on the year and is on a five-game hit streak.
UNC Wilmington Nick Feight – Catcher – (BT 2014 & 2015) - Feight has some of the best pop of any catcher in NCAA Baseball. Feight has a hit in 13 of his last 14 games including 10 RBI over his last six games. He has homered in four straight games and now has nine on the year with a .293 average and a team-leading 21 RBI
Creighton Bluejays Michael Emodi – Catcher – (BT 2016) - Emodi is quick and powerful. This past weekend, Emodi had three hits and two RBI against UC Davis. Emodi leads the team with 20 hits and also has a team-leading 21 RBI. Emodi is also terrific defensively, throwing out 12 of 16 runners attempting to steal.
Virginia Tech Hokies Kit Scheetz – Pitcher – (BT 2013 & 2014) - Scheetz has made a team leading 16 appearances out of the bullpen for the Hokies. Congrats to Kit, as he just struck out his 150th career batter. On the season, Kit is 3-0 in 24.1 innings with a 3.33 ERA. |
