Preview - Big Train Open Season Against Braves![]() Logan Driscoll Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League champions in 2016, the Big Train begin their title defense tomorrow night, opening the season on the road against the Herndon Braves. This year’s roster features, as always, talented players from colleges and universities across the country, as well as a mix of new and returning faces. After splitting a pair of exhibition games over the weekend, the Big Train look to carry the momentum from Sunday’s win over the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Little Train into tomorrow’s opener. Playing with a short roster due to many players’ participation in the NCAA tournament, the Big Train dropped their first exhibition contest of the year to the Gaithersburg Giants on Saturday. Despite allowing 13 runs to the visiting Giants, the Big Train demonstrated their own offensive prowess, scoring nine runs. Matt Green (St. Mary’s, CA) and Logan Driscoll (George Mason) had strong nights at the plate, each logging a pair of hits, including a homer for Green. The Big Train fared considerably better on Sunday, pitching a two-hit shutout against the BCC Little Train. Cameron Vassar (James Madison), Nash Eppard (Bryant) and Stephen Schoch (UMBC) combined to stymie the Little Train’s offense, while Green, Driscoll and Gaby Cruz (Bryant) led the five-run charge for the Big Train offense. Last summer, the Big Train finished first in the CRCBL South division, playing to a 28-12 record, while the Braves finished third in the division with an 18-22 record. The two teams played five times, with the Big Train winning the season series, 3-2. The first pitch at Oakton High School in Vienna, VA is at 7 pm. Come support the Big Train at their season opener!
