Big Train Jump on 'Bolts Early After Late Start

Hunter Renfroe hit his fifth home run on this swing in the first inning.
Box Score: W, 9-4

After a rain delay caused a late start to the game, the Big Train got out to a quick start and never looked back as they beat the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts 9-4.

After the T-Bolts scored a run in the top of the first, Michael Bass (UNC-Wilmington) was hit by a pitch and Brendan Hendriks (San Francisco) singled to start the Big Train half of the inning. Adam Barry (Cal State Northridge) then singled in Bass and crossed the plate himself on another home run from Hunter Renfroe (Mississippi State). That home run was his fifth of the season, and all have come in the last six games.

"I was hitting the ball pretty well," said Renfroe. "I got some balls I could hit."

Renfroe and Barry would team up once again in the second inning, as Renfroe's stolen base would draw a throw, allowing Barry to advance home from third and give the Big Train a 5-2 lead.

Starting pitcher Ben Griset (St. Mary's (CA)) would take over the game from there, giving up no runs over his next four innings of work. Griset allowed only six total base runners, including only one walk, going six innings and leaving the Big Train in position to win after turning the game over to Mike Kent (Clemson).

Kent would inherit a 6-2 lead, and pitched a scoreless seventh, setting up even more damage from the Big Train offense.

After reaching on three straight singles to lead off the inning, Colin Kish (Florida Southern), Cole Norton (St. Mary's (CA)) and Zach Randolph (Mississippi State) would all cross the plate in the bottom of the seventh, extending the Big Train lead to seven with two innings to play.

The nine runs would be more than enough for the win, as Kent held the Thunderbolts to just one hit over the final two innings.

"It felt good to be back here in Bethesda," said Kent of his season home debut. "I thought I pitched well overall."

Manager Sal Colangelo commented after the game on the team's recent success as well as the plan going forward.

"The pitchers have done a great job," said Colangelo. "When they needed to make a pitch they made a pitch ... We hadn't had everyone here (due to starters playing for their schools in the College World Series) to gel together, but now that we're playing as a team, things have been a lot easier ... Our goal is to win the tournament. We have to get in the top six spots. Hopefully we can get in the top three spots."
