Big Train Look to Keep Rolling vs. Express

Kirk Sidwell (Stetson) went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs on Friday.

After a tough-luck loss on Wednesday and a rainout on Thursday, the Big Train quickly got back to their winning ways on Friday, topping the Herndon Braves, 9-0. Winners of nine of their last ten, the Big Train look to keep the momentum going Saturday night against the Express.

On the heels of an impressive 12 players being selected to the All Star Game, which will be played on Monday, the Big Train’s offense and pitching demonstrated exactly why the team has one of the most talented rosters in the League. Friday’s win featured two Big Train homers – a solo shot by Logan Driscoll (George Mason) and a grand slam by Jordan Sergent (High Point) in his Big Train debut. The pitching contingent of Tyler Smith (East Carolina), John Murphy (Maryland), Joe Nahas (Maryland-Baltimore), Matt Pulos (Cal State Stanislaus), and Stephen Schoch (Maryland-Baltimore) combined to stymie the Braves offense, allowing just three hits in nine scoreless frames.

The Big Train return to Shirley Povich Field for a Saturday night showdown against the Rockville Express. With Thursday’s game against the Dodgers being cancelled due to inclement weather, the Big Train have not played at home since Sunday. After struggling there in the first half of the season, last weekend’s homestand could prove to be a watershed moment for the Big Train, as they swept all four games and raised their home record to 10-5.

The Big Train have fared well against the 9-19 Express this season, comfortably winning their three previous contests and outscoring their opponents, 27-2. Meeting for the final time, the Big Train have the chance to sweep the season series. Sitting only half a game behind the Aces for the South Division lead, the Big Train hope to make an impact in that race with a win on Saturday.

The first pitch at Povich Field is at 7 pm. Come decked in your most comfortable sleeping garments for Pajama Night! The game will be live-Tweeted (@gobigtrain) and broadcast by Max Wolpoff and PJ Glasser (mixlr.com/big-train).
