Big Train look to continue success against Redbirds

Alec Burleson hits a three-run homer into right field against the Riverdogs on June 18.

After shutting out the Loudoun Riverdogs 14-0 on Monday, the Bethesda Big Train (11-1) take on the Baltimore Redbirds (8-5) for Star Wars Night on Wednesday. Both teams lead their respective division.

The Big Train’s offense has been solid, putting up only one loss in 12 games. With four players--Alec Burleson (ECU), Justin Wylie (Arizona), John Glenn (Cal Baptist) and Carson Taylor—all batting above .350. Burleson also leads the league in home runs (6) and RBIs (17), all while having only played five games. As a two-way player, he has a win under his belt as well, after pitched four scoreless innings with three strikeouts against the D.C. Grays.

For the Redbirds, only Carl Gindl and Anthony Servideo are hitting above .350, and as a whole the team reaches base almost ten percentage points less than the Big Train, who have a team-wide .437 on-base percentage.

Right-hander Chris Clarke (USC) is likely to get the start for Bethesda. The junior has one win in two games pitched this season, with a 5.00 ERA and seven strikeouts in nine innings pitched.

Jake Kuchmaner is likely to get the start for Baltimore. With a 1-1 record, he’s pitched eight innings, with a 4.50 ERA and nine strikeouts.

The last time the Big Train took on the Redbirds, on June 12, Bethesda outscored Baltimore 7-4, with eight hits to Baltimore’s five. On Wednesday, the Big Train will look to repeat their previous success, this time at home.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m. It’s also Star Wars Night, so come dressed as your favorite Jedi’s!
