Big Train College Round-Up 2/23 Alex Hudak is off to a great start at Florida Atlantic The first week of the college baseball season is over and Big Train players all over the country are off to good starts. In fact, the best start in the country belongs to the Big Train-heavy roster from Florida Atlantic.
The Owls (#34 nationally according to Perfect Game) were named the National Team of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com after they went to Alabama and swept the Crimson Tide in a three-game series over the weekend by a combined score of 23-8. Prominently involved in the sweep were Alex Hudak (BT ’11) and Ryan Garton (BT ’11). Hudak (#7 2012 prospect in the Sun Belt according to Baseball America), who was named to the Preseason All Sun Belt Team last week, played so well during the series (6/12, 2BB, 5R, 7RBI, 2B, 2HR) that he was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week.
Joining his teammate in the weekly awards was Garton, who was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week after his great outing on opening day (W, 6IP, 3H, BB, 7K). Also contributing to the sweep were Jeremy Strawn (BT ’12) and Mitch Morales (BT ’12). Strawn handled the pitching (4IP, 3H, BB, 4K) in his start and Morales got his freshman campaign off to a good start at the plate (4/11, BB, RBI). Hugh Adams (BT ’06-11) was unable to play in the series due to a shoulder injury. Adams was named to the Preseason All Sun Belt Team last week, as well as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Stopper of the Year watch list (the country’s top 45 closers).
Two other teams had multiple Big Train players perform well last week. St. Mary’s (CA) Martin Agosta (BT ’11) was rated as the #3 prospect for the upcoming draft in the West Coast Conference, the #33 junior in the nation, and the #76 overall prospect for the upcoming draft by Baseball America and then went out and proved it on the mound (7IP, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 8K). His Gael teammates, Ben Griset (BT ’12) and Patrick Keane (BT ’10-11) helped contribute to the three-game sweep of Southern Utah as well (W, 7IP, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 7K and 2IP, 0ER, H, 3K respectively). Down south, Mississippi St. (#15 nationally according to Perfect Game) benefited from the bats of two Big Train players. Darryl Norris (BT ’12) and Hunter Renfroe (BT ’11-12) both came out of the gate fast (5/13, 2BB, 2R, 2RBI, 2B, SB and 3/9, 2BB, HBP, R, RBI, 2 2B, SB respectively) to help the Bulldogs win two out of three against Washington St.
Other Big Train player news from across the nation this week includes: Matt Bowman (BT ’10-12/Princeton) was named the #1 prospect in the Ivy League according to Baseball America… Tucker Donahue (BT ‘11/Stetson) was named the #45 senior in the nation and the #5 prospect for the upcoming draft in the Atlantic Sun Conference by Baseball America… Brennan Middleton (BT ’11-12/Tulane) had a great series (6/11, 4BB, 5R, 4RBI, 2B, SB) as the Green Wave swept a four-game series against Siena… Michael Bass (BT ‘11/UNC-Wilmington) got off to a good start (5/17, 2BB, 2R, 2B, 2SB) as the Seahawks took two of three from Ohio. |
