2014 Big Train Season Preview Johnny Cole is one of nine players set to return this summer. 2013 was another exciting summer of Big Train baseball, as the team posted the best regular season record in the CRCBL and made it the League Championship Game. We recently reflected on some of the highlights of what was a fantastic year of Big Train, but with the New Year upon us, let’s take a look at what 2014 has in store. As of now, the Big Train are set to return nine players from 2013, including Ryne Willard (Tallahassee CC), Johnny Cole (Coastal Carolina), Tim Yandel (Tulane), Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth), Kit Scheetz (Virginia Tech), Luis Collazo (Virginia Tech), Will Resnik (High Point), Josh Spano (High Point) and Kevin Tatum (Cornell). With that, the team brings back both of its starting middle infielders, the starting catcher, a starting pitcher, two reliable bullpen arms and two outfielders.
“We’re really happy to have some leadership coming back in Willard, Spano, Yandel and Cole,” said manager Sal Colangelo. “Having those guys back is tremendous. Mixing them up with new guys such as shortstop/second baseman Stephen Alemais (Tulane) and catcher Chuckie Robinson (Southern Mississippi) and then [returning players] like Will Resnik and the arms we have coming in, I think it’s going to be a magical year.”
The Big Train currently have 25 players under contract for the 2014 season, but with over five months to go before Opening Night, there’s still plenty of work to do. “It’s like it is every year; we’re the New York Yankees of the Cal Ripken League,” said Colangelo. “Everyone’s out to beat us. We have to keep getting better and doing the right things on and off the field to keep that perception.”
The Big Train will kick off the 2014 season on with an exhibition game on Saturday, May 31 at Povich Field as they play host to the Gaithersburg Giants at Povich Field.
