Big Train Beat Thunderbolts, 7-1 Stephen Alemais with one of his three hits on the night On a beautiful Saturday night with a crowd of over 700, the Bethesda Big Train won 7-1 against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts. Devon Loomis (San Francisco) got the starting nod for the Big Train, pitching three innings of one-run ball, striking out two batters.
Josh Thorne (Stetson) relieved the starter for the Big Train and pitched three scoreless innings, striking out three batters. The next member out the bullpen was Will Resnik (High Point), who pitched one inning, giving up no hits and no runs, striking out two batters. Eric Martin (Tennessee) came in next for the home team throwing another scorless inning for the Big Train. Henry Sisson (North Carolina) came in for the 9th inning and quickly retired the Thunderbolts to end the game. The Big Train pitching staff was phenominal on the night, giving up only one run in the ball game, striking out eight batters.
The Big Train started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning. Stephen Alemais (Tulane) started the inning off with a hard hit single to right field. Alemais stole second base, and Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth) walked. On the next pitch, Alemais stole third base and Farrar stole second. Alemais was able to advance home to give Big Train a 1-0, on a balk by the opposing pitcher.
The scoring continued in the 2nd inning for the Big Train. Sean Labsan (Florida Atlantic) reached on an error and advanced to third base on a double in the left-centerfield gap hit by Cody Manzella (High Point). Kevin Tatum (Cornell) knocked in his third RBI on the season with a rope down the right field line Stephen Alemais recorded his second single of the night. driving home two runs, giving him four RBI on the season.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Devon Loomis was able to escape a bases loaded, no-out, jam, giving up only one run in the inning. He struck out the Thunderbolts third batter looking, and then got the four hitter to ground into a double play on a perfect low and outside pitch. It was the second smoothe double play turned by the middle infielders, Stephen Alemais and Ryne Willard (N.C. State).
In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Big Train crossed the plate two more times. Cody Manzella singled and then reached second base on a fielders choice. Stephen Alemais hit his third single of the game, moving Manzella over to third. Alemais then stole second, for his third stolen base of the night. Farrar came up next and drove both runners home on a ground ball between the shortstop and third basemen, giving Farrar a team-lead five RBI on the season. Big Train was up 6-1 going into the 5th inning.
The Big Train crossed the plate one more time in the 8th inning. After a sharp double down the right field line by Cody Manzella, and a sacrifice to move over to third base, Josh Spano (High Point) recorded his first RBI of the season, knocking home Manzella, on a sacrifice fly to deep right field, giving the Big Train a 7-1 lead.
Notes: Alemais singled three times and also stole three bases....Manzella had two doubles and one single....Tatum had two hits on the night....Farrar reached base three times...Silver Spring-Takoma starting pitcher, Garrett Pearson, out of St. John's, was drafted in the 34th round, 1021st overall by the Baltimore Orioles. |
