In Battle of Unbeatens, Big Train Trounce the Aces![]() Stephen Alemais hit a home run on the first pitch of the game. In a battle of the unbeatens, the Bethesda Big Train bats were in full force, as the Big Train trounced the previously unbeaten Alexandria Aces on Monday night at Frank Mann Field. The pitching staff was phenomenal for the Big Train, and the offense continued their spectacular hitting, accumulating 13 hits. Henry Sisson (North Carolina Chapel Hill) got the start for Big Train and pitched great over five innings, giving up one run and three hits, while striking out five batters to get his first victory of the season.
Jacob Billingsley (Mississippi State) was stellar again out of the bullpen pitching two innings, giving up no hits, and striking out three. Billingsley's ERA is 0.00 on the season through five innings of work. Luis Collazo (Virginia Tech) took the mound for the Big Train in the final two innings, and struck out four batters, while giving up no hits. In nine innings against a team who had yet to lose, the Big Train pitching staff allowed only three hits and one run, while striking out 12 batters.
The Big Train bats remained hot, as the scoring started fast in the first inning. Stephen Alemais (Tulane) continued his torrid start with a first pitch, lead-off, home run. Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth) singled and then stole second base. Johnny Cole (Coastal Carolina) then hit his third double of the season scoring Farrar to give Big Train a 2-0 lead after one inning.
The Big Train struck again in the second inning when Cody Manzella (High Point) singled to start the inning, and Grant Brown (Tulane) walked. Stephen Alemais reached first on a fielders choice and then stole third base, which scored Grant Brown. Logan Farrar, up next, singled home Alemais for his seventh RBI of the season, giving Big Train a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.
The Big Train was able to cross the plate in the third straight inning on a lead off home run by Johnny Cole, his second extra-base hit of the night. After an Andrew Brown (San Diego State) walk, he was able to advance to third on Cody Manzella's third double of the season. Grant Brown singled the two home to give the Big Train a very comfortable 7-1 lead after three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Big Train was able to keep the runs coming. Logan Farrar tripled, and then scored on an error by the Aces shortstop. With a strong bullpen behind the hot hitting of the Big Train, it seemed safe to say the lead was good enough to get the win.
The Big Train was able to push across two more runs in the 6th inning. Logan Farrar started the rally with a hit-by-pitch, and then a swipe of second base, giving him two for the game. Johnny Cole singled on his third hit of the night, and then Farrar was able to score on an error by the second baseman on a ball hit by Andrew Brown. The next batter, Chris Lewis (Sacramento State), hit a single scoring Johnny Cole to finalize the scoring for the game, putting the score at 10-1.
The pitching and hitting has been great for the Big Train early in the season. The Big Train is now the only remaining undefeated team in the Cal Ripken League, posting a 6-0 record.
Notes: Johnny Cole had three hits and two RBI....Logan Farrar went 2-for-2, scoring three runs, stealing two bases, and walking two times...Cody Manzella had two hits on the night. |
