Chris Lewis (Sacramento State) hit two home runs and drove in four as Big Train defeated the Herndon Braves 6-2 Thursday night. With the win, Big Train clinched at least a tie with the Baltimore Redbirds for the league’s best record.
Big Train got on the board early, as Lewis jumped on the first pitch of the second inning and drove it over the left field fence for his sixth home run of the year. They extended their lead in the third, when a two-out single to center by Harrison Crawford (Creighton) drove home Zach Kirtley (St. Mary’s, Calif.) for a 2-0 advantage.
After Herndon got a run back in the fourth, Bethesda struck again in the top of the fifth, when, after a walk to Kirtley, Lewis launched another home run to deep left, giving Big Train a 4-1 lead.
Two more crossed the plate in the seventh, when Cody Brown (Mississippi State) scored on Kirtley’s double to right. Lewis followed this with a line drive double to deep center, his third hit of the game, which drove Kirtley in from second.
Meanwhile, ace Tim Yandel (Tulane) turned in another strong start, allowing two runs over 6 1/3 innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. Miller Trevvett (Radford) relieved Yandel in the seventh and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless frames. Mike Rescigno (Maryland) came on to get the final out of the ballgame, closing out Bethesda’s 29th win of the season.
Big Train’s record is currently ½ game better than that of the North Division-leading Redbirds. A Big Train win tomorrow would secure their place as 2015 Regular Season Champions, while a loss would make them co-champions with the Redbirds.
Notes: Lewis is the first Big Train player to hit two home runs in a game this season; Marcus Taylor (BT ’03) is the only player to hit three in one game…Lewis leads the league with seven homers and 37 RBI…along with Lewis’s three hits, Brown, Kirtley, Crawford, and Brandon Hunley (Sacramento State) each collected two hits…Yandel finishes the season in the top five in the league in wins (4), ERA (1.32), and strikeouts (38)…Big Train closes out the season tomorrow at home against the Alexandria Aces at 7:30 p.m.
