Big Train Split Doubleheader

It was the tale of two games Sunday as the Big Train split their Father’s Day doubleheader with the Vienna Riverdogs.

They kicked off the day with a 3-1 victory behind pitcher Johnny York (St. Mary’s).

Bethesda’s offense gave York support early with Allen Smoot (San Francisco) blasting a sac fly to left, giving the Big Train a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the second, they extended their lead behind a Peyton Sorrels (Maryland) sac fly to left. Smoot would add to his RBI total in the fifth after hitting a weak line drive to right, plating Clayton Daniel (Moorpark).

York had a dominant performance, pitching a complete game gem. He only gave up three hits with no earned runs and notched an impressive seven strikeouts.

“I was painting the outside with my fastball,” York said of his performance. “My slider was hitting their back-foot and they weren’t making too much contact with it. I got the changeup over the plate to seal the deal.”

In game two the Riverdogs came out swinging. They built a 3-0 lead in the first inning off a three run bomb to left and never looked back. Aside from solo home runs from Michael Emodi (Creighton) and Vinny Esposito (Sac St.), the Big Train was stagnant.

They dropped game two, 14-4.

Bethesda returns to action tomorrow in Gaithersburg to take on the Giants. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
