Big Train Drop Season Opener on Road Despite Great Effort![]() Matt Bowman drove in Tucker Tobin from third base on this swing. Though they fought hard, the Big Train were unable to overcome their lack of a full roster in their season opener against the Baltimore Redbirds. After giving up five early runs due to some control issues, Robbie Kidd (Tennessee) was able to settle down and pitch a couple of scoreless innings as the Big Train staged a comeback. The Big Train were able to push a run across in the third inning, followed by a big rally in the fourth. The rally started quickly as Brendan Hendriks (San Francisco) clobbered a ball over the right-centerfield fence. Hendriks drove a ball out of Povich during exhibition and looks like he'll be one of Big Train's power threats throughout this season. Tucker Tobin (George Mason), recovering from a pinched nerve that was suffered during exhibition, hit the first pitch of the next at bat over the centerfielder's head for a ground-rule double. Matt Bowman (Princeton) was able to drive Tobin in on a frozen rope line drive to center. After Avondre Bollar (San Diego State) reached on an error, a two-out bloop single by Tyler Thomas (Shepherd) drove in both Bowman and Bollar to tie the game. Thomas was the real story of the game for the Big Train. Thomas comes to the Big Train after his senior year of high school at Woodbridge. Without many of the players that may make up the roster later in the summer, Thomas has been solid at first base. He reached base every time he came to the plate on Wednesday as he recorded two singles and drew two walks. After the comeback, the Redbirds were able to get to Kidd again as they scored three more over the next two innings to chase Kidd from the mound. Though he gave up eight, Kidd struck out more batters (four) then he allowed hits (three). Will Resnick (High Point) and Derrick Sylve (Southeastern CC) came in to finish the game and combined to give up only one more run in three innings. Though the scoreboard says differently, this game was a win for the team overall. Without a bunch of key players, The Big Train were able to put up a strong fight against the Redbirds who are sure to be one of the top teams in the CRCBL this season. The Big Train will travel to Southern Maryland to take on the Nationals at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday night at 7:00. |
