Andrew Williamson Earns Big Train MVP Award

Center fielder Andrew Williamson (Central Florida) put together a stellar season for the Big Train, breaking numerous Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League records. Big Train manager Sal Colangelo named Williamson MVP in honor of his outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the team on and off the field.

“Andrew put on the greatest offensive display that we’ve ever seen in the Cal Ripken Sr. League,” Colangelo said. “Not only his batting average, but RBIs, home runs. The guy almost won the Triple Crown. No one has hit .462. He’s broken a lot of records and played every game and was a leader on the field.”

Williamson set new League records in batting average (.462), slugging percentage (.908), and OPS (1.452). He also now ranks second all time in total bases with 99, only behind Hunter Renfroe’s (Big Train, ’12) 116, and he is tied for fourth all time in doubles with 16.

Williamson hit nine home runs in the regular season, and he hit one more in the postseason — a three-run shot that secured the Big Train’s walk-off, run-rule win over the Braves in the play-in game. He earned the League Championship Series Most Outstanding Player Award, batting 6-for-11 with three runs scored, one RBI, and three stolen bases in the Big Train’s two-game sweep over the Senators.

Through his 35 games played in the regular and postseason, Williamson was astonishingly consistent, earning at least one hit in all but three games he appeared in. Not only that, he had 19 multi-hit games, including three four-hit games.

Williamson was nearly unstoppable at the plate, and he provided lockdown defense in center field, too, making a number of diving and leaping catches. All season long, his leadership and immense skill were on display, culminating in broken records and MVP honors.
