Coach Sal Interviews Dodgers Prospect Austin Gauthier

by Raquel Ordonez

General Manager/Head Coach Sal Colangelo, who had the privilege of working with Austin Gauthier during his time with the Bethesda Big Train in 2021, sat down for an insightful interview reflecting on Gauthier's journey from the collegiate summer league to the brink of major league baseball.

Austin Gauthier, a versatile infielder who played both shortstop and second base for the Big Train, had a standout performance in the 2021 season. He posted a solid .279 batting average across 24 games, showcasing his potential as both a consistent hitter and reliable fielder. Colangelo remembers Gauthier's work ethic and maturity on the field, qualities that would soon propel him into the professional ranks.

Gauthier’s strong performance with Big Train did not go unnoticed, and he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers before the conclusion of the Ripken League season. Since then, Gauthier has been on a steady climb through the Dodgers’ system. After spending 2021 in the minor leagues, he made his way to AAA Oklahoma City in 2024, where he posted a respectable .247 batting average in 106 games. His overall minor league batting average stands at an impressive .279.

Now, as a non-roster invitee to the Dodgers' spring training camp, Gauthier is poised to continue his development with an eye on making his major league debut. With his solid foundation and the support of his coaches and mentors, Austin Gauthier continues to push toward his dream of playing in the major leagues.
